Amidst preparation for his matchup against the New York Jets this season, Russell Wilson was shocked to discover that the Jets OC, Nathaniel Hackett, was actually his head coach last season.
“It really left me gobsmacked,” Russell said in comments after practice today. The moment in question came during a film session, in which current head coach Sean Payton requested Wilson's input on how to defend a Hackett-led offense.
"Who? Me? I’ve never seen that man before in my life!" Wilson said whilst performing a vigerous set of high-knees, "Though, now that you mention it, he does look a little like the guy who stands backstage at Ciara concerts, and makes me prove I'm her husband before getting inside.”
Other Broncos players also needed some convincing that Hackett was indeed their coach last season. When asked where he got his plays from each game, Russell provided an explanation.
“You see, I would just pray to God before each game and He would speak to me. It was almost like an audible voice in my helmet, I just knew exactly what to do. Sure it didn’t always work out, but the key is that we had clear eyes, full hearts, and learned a lot of valuable lessons along the way.”
Hackett was also asked for comment about his experience coaching last season and this was his response: “Honestly it’s pretty much a blur... I do remember Russ saying “Let’s Ride” over and over, and I keep having recurring dreams of the stadium chanting numbers at me. Not sure what that was about.”
After losing to a much maligned Jets team, we followed up with Wilson after the game to see if playing against Hackett had jogged his memory.
“I don’t even remember what he looks like so I couldn’t tell you. But you know I did notice that Aaron Rodgers looks a lot different this season. He really doesn’t seem to be himself since he shaved that beard and dyed his hair blonde. I hope he figures some things out."
